Company background

Our company was founded in 1983 by Tim Berry, a Stanford MBA, business planning expert, and co-founder of Borland International. During the 1980s, the company focused mainly on consulting and market research, with clients including Apple Computer, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Lotus Development Corporation, Ashton-Tate and others. Business Plan Pro, our first software product, evolved from extensive consulting in business planning for large and small companies. Following its successful launch, we realized there was a need for more dead-simple software to help people succeed in business.

Company leadership

In 2007, Tim transferred responsibility for daily operations to his daughter Sabrina Parsons, our CEO, her husband, Noah Parsons, who serves as COO, and Josh Cochrane, who serves as Vice President of Product Development. Sabrina and Noah co-founded Palo Alto Software Ltd., a London-based software distributor that is now a fully owned subsidiary of our company serving the UK and EU markets. Sabrina and Noah are both graduates of Princeton University and veterans of Silicon Valley, having worked at Yahoo!, Epinions, Commtouch, and their own consulting firm, Lighting Out Inc. Josh joined the team at Palo Alto Software in early 2007, overseeing the company's online marketing and e-commerce operations. More recently, Josh has moved into product development, focusing on helping to design and build the next generation of the Palo Alto's award-winning products. Tim is still actively involved with Palo Alto Software in his role as President and planning expert. He concentrates his time on blogging, teaching, speaking, and evangelizing for better planning in business.

Business plan software

In the early 1990s, Palo Alto Software moved north to Eugene, Oregon, and began developing software to help with business planning. By selling boxes of software instead of hours of consulting time, we found we could help small and midsized businesses do best-practice planning at a price they could afford.

Our flagship product, Business Plan Pro, launched in 1995. Now in its 11th generation, Business Plan Pro is the world's best-selling business plan software, outselling all others combined. It has received numerous awards and positive reviews from the Wall Street Journal, PC World, Entrepreneur Magazine, and more, as well as from thousands of real-world startups and small businesses.

Marketing plan software

In 1996, we introduced a companion product for developing effective marketing plans. Marketing Plan Pro is the perennial best-seller in its category and serves the full range of businesses from small startups to Fortune 500s.

Shared email made easy

Email Center Pro is our first "software as a service" product. We developed the prototype internally to solve our own real-world problems with emails to group inboxes like sales@paloalto.com and help@paloalto.com. After talking to partners and customers about their own email challenges, we've expanded our solution and made it available to you.
